Looking for something fun to do with your family?
Evan Olson from Say Hello to the City has 6 great ideas for you!
1. Downtown Des Moines' Farmers' Market
In my humble opinion, nothing says summer like a good, old farmers' market and Des Moines has one of the best in the country! There's tons of homegrown produce, fresh flowers, live music, and endless amounts of food. Bring cash and an empty stomach! More info (including parking tips) on their site.
2. Gray's Lake
This city park is one of my favorite places because it's so versatile. I come here to read, take walks, and have picnics with a friend. There are even canoes and paddle-boards to rent! It can get pretty crowded in the warmer months, but there's more than enough green space for everyone. More info on their site here.
3. Des Moines Art Center
This one is a great option because it's completely free. While some of the featured art tends to make me sort of sleepy, they often have temporary exhibits that are out-of-this-world. Last year, they had tunnels built out of tape that you could CRAWL INTO. And for you retro folks, they also show classic movies on the front lawn during the summer. Check their website for more details.
4. The Walls on Court Avenue
Everyone likes a good Instagram picture and there's no better place to snap one than the murals on the walls of RoCA. If you're downtown at the farmers' market - you can't miss them! My favorite one is #thismustbetheplace
5. Horizon Line Coffee
Every city needs a good coffee shop and early last year, we were graced with the presence of this little gem. Owned and operated by two dudes from SoCal, HLC serves up delicious caffeinated beverages, but you won't finds frappes here - they're serious about their art. I suggest an iced matcha latte or their vanilla latte with oat milk. Their staff is the most hospitable in town! Check out their menu here.
6. Eatery A
This last one is a solid option for date night. Why? Because happy hour is every day of the week from 3-6PM and that means all of their Mediterranean-inspired pizzas are 1/2 off. Best deal in town (and a wonderful patio, too).
